The new name reflects the fund’s statewide impact and its commitment to supporting people across Maryland and beyond.
Baltimore, MD — Today, the Baltimore Abortion Fund unveiled its new name—the Abortion Fund of Maryland—underscoring its role as a lifeline for abortion care across the state and beyond in the face of relentless attacks on access.
The organization has been a fixture in the Baltimore community and across Maryland for more than a decade, providing financial assistance, logistical support, and legislative advocacy to ensure callers have the resources they need to access care. The new name reflects the organization’s statewide reach, its expansive volunteer network, and the growing number of callers it supports each year across Maryland, the country, and the globe.
“Our new name, the Abortion Fund of Maryland, reflects a fundamental truth: we are a vital resource for the entire state,” said Lynn McCann-Yeh, Co-Executive Director of the Abortion Fund of Maryland. “People across Maryland, and increasingly from across the country, turn to us for support. As relentless attacks on abortion care escalate nationwide, it is more critical than ever that people know safe, supportive abortion care is available here in Maryland.”
While the city of Baltimore will always be part of the organization’s story, the majority of people supported now come from every corner of Maryland, as well as from outside states. Since its inception, the fund has:
- Provided financial and logistical support to over 9,000 callers, including both Maryland residents and people traveling here for care.
- Supported people from the Baltimore metropolitan area, all 23 Maryland counties, 50 states, and over 10 countries.
- Partnered with 23 clinics and hospitals statewide, with more than half located outside the Baltimore metropolitan area.
- Worked with abortion providers, policymakers, and community members this legislative session to launch a first-of-its-kind public health abortion grant program in Maryland.
“From answering hotline calls to coordinating travel, our powerful, statewide network of volunteers allows us to meet the moment and ensure no one has to face barriers to care alone,” said Amee Vora, Board Member of the Abortion Fund of Maryland. “This rebrand to the Abortion Fund of Maryland proudly represents the collective effort of every single volunteer who powers this work from across the state.”
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, the demand for abortion care in Maryland has surged, with roughly one-third of people traveling from outside Maryland to access care. Additionally, the fund has nearly quadrupled its support in just two years, distributing $250,000 in 2021 and over $1 million in 2023.
