General information
What is an abortion fund?
An abortion fund is an organization that helps people access abortion care by providing financial support and other resources. Abortion funds exist to reduce barriers—like cost, travel, or legal restrictions—that can make abortion care inaccessible, especially for marginalized communities.
How does AFM pay for my care?
We send financial pledges directly to the clinic on behalf of clients; we do not offer direct payment to clients.
Can you cover all of my appointment costs?
We can cover costs associated with medication or procedural abortions. The amount we’re able to contribute depends on how far along you are. We are unable to cover the cost of your care completely, but we will do our best to offer resources to help address any gaps after our pledge.
Why does the phone go to voicemail when I call you?
Our intake line operates as a “warmline.” While we do not have staff available to answer calls immediately, we will respond to you within 48 hours following your scheduled appointment date.
How will you maintain confidentiality? I don’t want anyone to know I’m having an abortion.
All of your information is kept confidential. We will only share your information with someone outside our organization if you’ve consented to a referral.
Can undocumented people or minors receive help?
Yes. We do not ask about immigration status, and we support people of all ages. Your safety and autonomy are our priorities.
English isn’t my first language; do you offer translation services?
Yes. We offer translation services through a confidential third-party language service.
What kind of training do your volunteers receive?
Volunteers complete a phone interview, a background check, and a 4-hour training.
Eligibility & getting started
How do I know if I’m eligible?
Our services are free and available to everyone living in and most people traveling to Maryland for abortion care. We do not have income, age, or gestational limits.
Do I need an appointment before calling?
You don’t need an appointment to call us, but you must schedule one for AFM to confirm the amount of funding or logistical support we can provide. If you’re unsure which clinic to contact or how to schedule an appointment, we can assist you with a referral. Alternatively, you can visit our providers page to search for one in your area. If you already know which clinic you want to visit, we recommend scheduling an appointment before you call.
How far in advance should I call?
For logistical support, such as a ride or hotel accommodations, we recommend contacting us as soon as you schedule your appointment. We require at least two days’ notice to make arrangements. If you need financial support, please reach out within seven days of your appointment. If your appointment is more than a week away, please call us back closer to the scheduled date.
Can you accommodate same-day appointments?
We are unable to accommodate same-day requests.
What if I’m not eligible for help from your fund?
If we’re unable to assist you directly, we’ll do our best to refer you to other abortion funds, logistical support organizations, or clinics in your region. We’re part of a larger network of care, and we’ll work with you to find the support you need.
After You Call
I left a message; what happens now?
We will call you back within 48 hours of your appointment date (holidays and weekends permitting) and have a 5-20 minute phone conversation. We will ask you questions to understand your funding and logistical support needs better, confirm how much support we can offer, explain the next steps, and make referrals if needed.
I had to reschedule; what happened to AFM’s pledge?
AFM can honor our original pledge if your new appointment is still within our service area. Please call us with the new appointment date so we can send an updated pledge to the clinic.
I already had my appointment, but I just learned about AFM; can you reimburse me?
Unfortunately, we cannot retroactively pay for care.
What if I have questions about the abortion process itself?
We’re here to support you and can help answer general questions, but we also work closely with clinics and health providers who can give you detailed medical information. We can connect you to accurate, compassionate resources.
